Inside book:

Throughout history music and food have gone together. From the merry sound of minstrels in the medieval gallery, to the 'Table Music' commissioned from Telemann in eighteenth century Germany, to the music for the fashionable salons and soirées of the nineteenth century, music has always been associated with entertaining and dining. As George Lillo wrote, in Holland in the early eighteenth century, 'There's sure no passion in the human soul, But finds its food in music.'

This album presents music which could suit entertaining and dining. A large and comprehensive selection of Baroque music gives plenty of mood and variety, while remaining cheerfully uplifting throughout. Concertos, dance suites and solo harpsichord contribute to the mood of openness and fun which pervades the whole album. Nothing too serious, but great music, nonetheless!

Music has the power to create atmosphere and to affect the mood and feeling of an assembled group of friends. Use the album for dining, use it for ideas for other musical programmes - or occasions - or simply listen to it for the enjoyment of the great music it contains.

'If music be the food of love, play on'
William Shakespeare: Twelfth Night

'Of soup and love, the first is best'
Thomas Fuller: Gnomologia

'The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils;
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus:
Let no such man be trusted.'
William Shakespeare: The Merchant of Venice
