The music of the past can take many forms, from the glorious music of the early church to the earliest attempts of the people to capture emotions and beauty in sound. The music on this album - the songs and dances handed down through the generations - always speaks to us in a clear voice, a reminder of the past, of history and the passage of time, but with a sometimes surprising relevance to how we are now. The troubles, the joys, the sadness, the love and the longing of the souls of the past were not so different from those of today. Through the music we can touch on past generations and understand something of times past. A Celtic love song is much the same as a modern song of today.
On this album a lone harper plays a series of songs of Celtic origin. Songs of love, of war, of landscape, of joy and sadness, one after the other, building a world of past ages in sound. The reiving ship sails by, inviting us to journey to the land of the imagination, the land of dreams. Songs of a boy and a beautiful girl, the rowan tree and a Celtic hero follow the boat - and then the boatman himself calls us, as the music takes us to the sea, its waves and creatures calling us with their messages of timelessness and of the eternal ebb and flow. The sea maiden herself sings to us, and we hear the Celtic angels speaking to us from beyond the shore and we can dream - Celtic dreams of nature, and of oneness with the world.
The small harp - the 'clarsach' - is the perfect instrument for this music. Small enough to be portable, it would have been carried through the countryside by bardic folk, who would sing and play a lament - or a dance - in exchange for hearth and board. Other instruments can be heard on this album, from the small, melodious Aeolian pipe, to the flute and whistle of ancient origin. And the waves and whales themselves make music, their special, natural songs merging with the music of man to form sweeps of sounds which build a dreamscape, an inner world of the past, present and future. on body
